Generally the visibility runs 24-45 meters/80-150 feet. During the rainy season (roughly October to January) visibility can dip below the usual 30-45 meters/100-150 feet.

Temperature

​

Warm tropical weather is the norm, with little change in temperature from winter to summer. Average annual temperature is 85° F/29.4° C. Nice warm water year round, varying Jan-Mar 78°F, July-Sept 82°F. Humidity is usually high, especially from May to September. 

Dive Season

​

You can dive the Bay Islands all year long, but the tropical, rainy season runs from October to January. The Bay Islands’ southern Caribbean location means that hurricanes sometimes pass by to the north. Hurricane season is June to the end of November.

Scuba Diver

If you’re short on time but really want to become a diver, the PADI Scuba Diver rating might be right for you. You will be diving with a guide to a maximum depth of 12 metres/40 feet. This course is an intermediate step for earning an Open Water Diver certification.

Open Water Diver

Get ready to experience the freedom of open water. The full Open Water Course can be done in a few days and upon completion of training, you will be fully certified to dive anywhere in the world.

Advanced Certifications

Some of the dives offered are Deep Diver, Underwater Navigator, Night Diver, Underwater Photography, Fish identification. They credit toward your Advanced Open Water Certification.

We cooperate with experienced and professional dive operations on the East End of Roatan, who are PADI certified. 

Abundant Marine Life

​

There are more than 300 identified fish species in Bay Island waters. Divers frequently see dolphin, grouper, rays, barracuda, angelfish, butterfly fish, grunts, parrotfish, yellow tail snapper, horse eye jack, octopus, lobsters, crabs, moray eels, hammerhead sharks and even whale sharks.​

 

Whether it is the occasional appearance of a Cayman patrolling the mangroves, the silent flyby of a Spotted Eagle Ray, gentle encounters with a resting Nurse Shark, the ballet of the Sting Rays that feed in the sand, the aloof Barracuda or shy Spotted Eel, you will always find a friend.

Fort Key Wall

35'-110'/11-33m, all levels

Dive along your own section of the steep wall of the Bonacca Ridge and see the beautiful overhangs covered with sponges and corals.

Blue Hole

10'-70'/3-21m, all levels

Dive into the marine cavern, the nursing area of a wide variety of tropical fish. Divers can stay in the shallow areas or descend down to just above the impressive abyss which drops thousands of feet below.

Eco-Friendly Tourism

​

The ancient reef surrounding Roatan forms part of the Meso American Reef, the second largest barrier reef in the world. The nearby Cayman Trench brings deep water nutrients to our rich diversity of coral and fish life resulting on a lush underwater ecosystem.​

​

Healthy reefs are a precious resource. Dive tourism contributes hundreds of millions of dollars to the Caribbean economy each year — and all of these destinations know that Caribbean reefs must be protected, with marine parks and programs to promote reef conservation and encourage sustainable practices.

​

Fort Morgan Cay is an active supporter of the Roatan Marine Park and cares closely for the fragile eco system surrounding it. For this reason, we collect and treat our sewage and run largely on solar power.

Easy Diving

​

Many of our dive sites are easily accessible diving off right from our beaches. Hundreds of meters of undisturbed reef diving and some of the most spectacular dive sites of Roatan wait for you to be discovered. We will be glad to give you advice or guidance for going out on your own or organize tours with certified dive masters.

Competitive Diving

​

Roatan is home to the Annual International Freediving Competition Caribbean Cup.

​

The first 5 editions of the Caribbean Cup (2013 – 2017) were held in the warm, deep waters off Roatan. The 2017 AIDA World Championship organized by Roatan Freediving School & Training Center, was attended by 96 athletes from 28 countries.​Free Immersion (FIM), Constant Weight with Fins (CWT), and Constant Weight Without Fins (CNF) are the three disciplines in which athletes try to reach greater depths while holding their breath.
